A review on failure theories and simulation models for adhesive joints

In the framework of Cost Action CERTBOND (Reliable roadmap for certification bonded primary structures), a wide group researchers from 27 European Countries have had opportunity to work on topic joints structural applications different engineering sectors such as aerospace, automotive, civil engineering, wind energy and marine sectors. Since virtual testing optimization are basic tools in process, one key objectives is critically review some available models failure theories adhesive joints. The present paper summarizes outcome this task. Nine models/theories described detail. Specifically, reviewed Classical Analytical Methods, Process Zone Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM), Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT), Stress Singularity Approach, Finite (FFM), Cohesive Method (CZM), Progressive Damage Modeling method Probabilistic methods. Also, at end paper, modeling temperature effects been addressed. For each model/theory, information methodology, required input, main results, advantages disadvantages given.
